Tell me about Jasson John - local Ornithologist & BirdLife International Conservationist...

Jasson John, Conservationist

Jasson John is the BirdLife International Conservationist working on the Spotted Ground Thrush Project.

  • Local ornithologist with many years of experience in Tanzania
  • Conducts field research in several of Tanzania's 80+ Important Bird Areas
  • Particular interest in biodiversity conservation of the Eastern Arc and Tanzania Coastal Forests Hotspots
  • He helped develop the International Action Plan for the endangered Spotted Ground Thrush (Zoothera guttata) - and this is the conservation project he is now focussed on.

Join him on this Special & Exclusive Safari... and help make a difference!

Tell me about the Spotted Ground Thrush Project...

The Spotted Ground Thrush (Zoothera guttata) is an endangered & endemic bird species.  The population is in continual decline due to its restricted and highly fragmented habitat - forests which are severely threatened due to human encroachment; clearing for agriculture, unsustainable land use and logging.  Only 6.7% of the original forest area remains.

The BirdLife Africa International Partnership recognised that the limited knowledge about the species is a critical problem hindering its conservation, coupled with a general lack of awareness among the local communities.

In collaboration with CS Wildlife Fund we are raising funds for:

  • Design & development of educational material about the plight of this species
  • Dissemination of educational material to local communities
  • Awareness raising regarding values of the forest & the importance of sustainable management
  • Workshops for local communities
