Mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei) are critically endangered and their survival continues to be threatened by extensive habitat loss, poaching and human diseases. A census in 2004 put their total population at just 380 individuals remaining in 30 social groups.
Populations still remain in the tropical
montane forests of Rwanda and Uganda's Virunga
mountains and you can go trekking to see
these gentle giants in both countries.
